I Vote Madison is hosting a citizen debate on Wednesday, May 3rd from 5:30 PM-7 PM in auditorium 1 of the Madison Public Library. You may show up at any time convenient to your schedule. We will be recording this debate for those who are unable to attend.
Participants are welcome to speak on why they are in favor of or against Madison changing to a council-manager form of government. Registration is preferred but not mandatory. Priority will be given to speakers who register.
This is a Braver Angels-style debate. If you've never participated in a Braver Angels debate, click here to learn more about what to expect.
On the registration form we ask whether you'll be speaking for or against this change to our government structure, because we want to ensure equal representation on both sides of the issue.
Let your voice be heard!
It's an opportunity for any Madison resident to share their thoughts about the possible governance transition. We want to hear from you!
How it works
It's a Braver Angels-style debate. Watch the short video above to see what a Braver Angels' debate looks like. When speaking, individuals will direct their remarks to the debate chair and address her as "Madame Chair." We'll provide a handout at the event with reminders. The chair is a Huntsville resident and a member and volunteer of the League of Women Voters of the Tennessee Valley.
Four speakers well versed on the issue, 2 pro/2 con, will open the debate and each have 4 minutes to speak. Two questions will be taken from attendees and the speakers will have 1 minute to respond to each question.
Additional speakers will have 3 minutes, and the debate chair will alternate requests to speak between pro and con viewpoints. Priority will be given to individuals who register before the debate.
Debate Goals
-
Balance of pro and con viewpoints
-
Opportunity for any resident to speak
-
Absence of polarizing, partisan rhetoric
-
Deeper understanding of the issue
Madison residents will get to decide whether Madison switches to a council-manager form of government by participating in the upcoming special election on Tuesday, May 9th 2023.
